When she began composing her Violin Conceto, Unsuk Chin first appropriated the canonical form and gestures. But her science of the orchestra, nourished by the shimmering, fluid, ever-changing colours of her Balinese Gamelan influences, as well as the extreme virtuosity she demands of her soloists, provide new possibilities and offer new acoustic experiences in the context of the classical tradition.
With his Second Self Michel van der Aa goes back to the tradition and the dynamics of the concerto grosso, taking the opportunity to push his reflection on the concept of alter ego one step further: the string quartet emerges as another version of the orchestra itself, its interior voice – that or those “other me(s)” whose interactions and conflicts are at the very heart of this piece. Spaces of Blank is even more daring, setting to music poems that address a rather abstract theme – anxiety, fear – with the help of spatial metaphors. These are spaces characterised by great solitude and an almost palpable anguish, evoked by the composer through acoustic manipulation, playing thus with our own perception.
