WATER EVENT
WATER EVENT
From March 9th to July 10th 2016 the three floors of Lyon’s Contemporary Art Museum are devoted to the work of Yoko Ono. This first French retrospective, entitled "YOKO ONO Lumière de L’aube" presents more than a hundred of the artist’s works, including a Water Event. This is a revisited version of the work since its first performance in 1971 alongside John Lennon, and involving many other artists, among them musicians of the Biennale Musiques en Scène 2016.

Responding to Yoko Ono’s invitation to produce a collaborative “water sculpture”, Michel van der Aa, Ondřej Adámek, Clara Ianotta, Pierre-André Valade, Noémi Boutin and the Quatuor Diotima simply propose a water recipient or the idea for a recipient, representing half of the sculpture, the conceptual artist providing the other half – water (We are all water, she sais). Since the original, in it’s current meaning, is no longer an original to Yoko Ono, but a beginning – meaning a diagram for a story to be experienced – she favours works that can be presented in a practicable “version” for a large audience. That is the lesson to be learned from Yoko Ono: one of experimentation and sharing. Most of her performances are participatory; they require the spectator to stop being one, while placing the artist in an observatory rather that active role, where she simply notices the effects of her work, which is often a device involving physical experimentation. Water Event is the archetype of this kind of device.
